Hawk with Severed Head Pipe
Item: HAWK

This pipe was inspired by a stone pipe bowl from the Mississippian Period.    I elongated the Hawk figure to make a hand held pipe.  Otherwise this is very much like the original artifact.  The original artifact was found in the Winterville site in Washington County Mississippi and was dated to 1200-1300 AD

Materials and Techniques:  This pipe is hand formed from Native Clay which I dig and process myself.  The details were carved in and it was hand burnished using a polished stone.  It was then fired traditionally outdoors in a wood fire which was smothered with manure creating the rich black color.

Size: 5 inches long 2.25 inches tall 1.25 inches wide
